The island of Kefalonia, also known as Kefallinia, is the largest of the Ionian Islands with an area of approx. 350 sq. miles of which Mount Ainos covers a big part.
Kefalonia’s impressive coastline is deeply indented with gulfs and capes ranging from rocky beaches to smoother bays, especially along the eastern coasts of the island..
According to historical studies, Homer’s Ithaca is located in the island of Kefalonia.

- In the east part of the island you may visit some amongst the most important natural sights: Drogarati cave, Melissani lake, Monastery Aghion Fanenton, Sami Castle and the Cyclopean Walls of over 3km long.
The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli. There you may stroll along the commercial street of Lithostroto, walk across the Drapano Bridge, and if you have time, pay a visit to the Archaeological and Folk Art Museums. A little further you must not miss seeing the rare geological phenomenon of Katovothres. Nearby, in the area of Lassi you will find attractive beaches such as Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos. Most of the lively nightlife is gathered around Argostoli where modern bars and night clubs are busy until late in the morning.
We suggest you to visit the famous St George Castle, Aghios Andreas Monastery, the Byzantine Museum, and last but not least the Mycenaean tombs at Mazarakata village.
- Lixouri is located in the west part of the island. There sits the famous rock of Kounopetra and the red sandy beach of Xi. It is worthwhile going to Kipouria Monastery (breathtaking view from the cliff top).
- Undoubtedly the trademark of the northern part of the island is the impressive beach of Myrtos, qualified as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world !). The area, and most precisely the pretty village of Assos, offers a number of fish tavernas serving traditional mediteranean meals. Amongst the most famous location is the picturesque and colourful village of Fiskardo, full of charm that will surely enchant you.
- The long beach of Skala is located in the south and probably most impressive part of the island. Skala is a pleasant little resort where people’s hospitality and friendliness makes you feel at home. In the area surrounding Skala, you may explore the fishing village of Katelios and the Sakkos Cave, or even spend time hiking, visiting horse farms and enjoying water sports, thus assuring a wonderful stay !
The area of Katelios Bay, particularly Mounda Beach is officially protected as it is considered to be the main nesting site of Caretta caretta sea turtles.
